Description
Dukes Theatre is a parish church that was built in 1796 and converted into a theatre in 1971. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and has a slate roof. The south wall, which faces Moor Lane, features five bays with raised quoins and a plinth. There is a doorway on the left side and an upper row of low round-headed windows that originally illuminated the gallery. These windows have plain reveals and projecting sills, with recent joinery that includes glazing bars. The fourth bay now contains a doorway. The main doorway is topped with a cornice hood supported by plain console brackets.
The west wall also has five bays and similar windows but is more elaborately designed. The ground-floor windows in the second and fourth bays have cornices on console brackets, and the stonework of the central bay projects slightly forward, topped with a triangular pediment above the gallery window level. Above this, on either side at a higher level, are small windows with plain reveals. At the top of the gable, there is a small pedimented bellcote with a round-arched opening. To the east and north of the building, there are 20th-century extensions.
