Description

No. 13 Great John Street is a house built around 1800, with later alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof that is hipped on the right side. The building has a rectangular plan and is situated on a shallow site at the corner of Dalton Square. It stands three storeys high and has three bays, along with a basement that is expressed as a plinth made of larger stones. Notable architectural details include a moulded gutter cornice and a large chimney stack on the left-hand gable.

The raised entrance is accessed by a flight of six steps with nosings, which run parallel to the wall and are protected by iron-bar railings. These railings have a ramped handrail and turned baluster standards topped with urn finials. The doorway features plain reveals beneath a cornice supported by fluted consoles, and it has narrow double doors, each with three panels. The windows, including those on the one-bay return wall facing Dalton Square, have plain reveals and are sashed without glazing bars. There are also two cellar openings that are partly blocked and partly glazed.
