Description
No. 5 Dalton Square is a house that has been converted into council offices. It was built between 1801 and 1809 for Jacob Ridley. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan, with a doorway and a rear wing on the left side, and chimney stacks on both gables. The structure has three tall storeys above a cellar and consists of three bays, with a sill band on the first floor and an eaves cornice.
The doorway, located in the left-hand bay, is accessed by a flight of four steps that run parallel to the wall. It features a pedimented Ionic sandstone doorcase. The door itself has nine raised and fielded panels and is topped with an overlight that has radiating glazing bars. The steps leading to the doorway are enclosed by bar railings with ball finials on the standards. All the windows have plain reveals and glazing bar sashes, with twelve panes on the ground and first floors and nine panes on the second floor. There is a single-storey extension on the right-hand side, but it is not of special interest.
