Description
A group of warehouses built around 1870 in an Italian Gothic style. They are constructed from ashlar stone, with hipped slate roofs. The buildings comprise Nos. 32, 34, 36, 38, and 40 Station Road. No. 40 has 10 bays, with 6 of those bays curving around a corner, while No. 32 has 3 bays. Only a doorway remains at No. 34.
The facades are distinguished by massive piers with nook shafts, heavy foliated capitals, and a consoled cornice with blocking courses and dies above the piers. The ground floor windows have arched heads, while the first and second floors have round arched heads, all with gothic hood moulds and alternately coloured voussoirs. Large sculpted roundels are present on piers and within the ground floor window tympana, depicting a squirrel, flowers, and foliage. Between the second-floor windows are angled shafts terminating in grotesque beasts. The doorways have panelled doors, a flat lintel, and lobed relieving arches.
A row of 11 squat piers across the front of the buildings feature segmental pedimented heads, with some original gothic ironwork remaining. During a survey, the roof of No. 40 was missing.
