Description

Slaithwaite Hall, No. 1, is a former dwelling house with possible origins in the early 16th century, though significantly altered in the early to mid-18th century on its north side and the 19th century on its south side. It is a cruck-framed building constructed of coursed rubble, with a pitched stone slate roof. The building is single-storied.

The south-east elevation has two doorways, which are likely later additions, alongside a three-light stone mullioned window and a two-light stone mullioned window with a pronounced sill. The north-west elevation features two recessed, double-chamfered two-light stone mullioned windows.

Inside, a single cruck truss remains, where the blades touch at the apex and cradle the ridge. Below the apex is a halved collar, and further below a lower collar. Surviving original purlins suggest the presence of additional, now-removed, cruck trusses. Halvings for former wind braces and tie spurs indicate that the walls were originally timber-framed. It is likely that the cruck originally spanned the open hall of an earlier house.
