Description
Christ Church is a Gothic Revival church built in 1859, designed in the Decorated style. It was endowed by Charles Brook of Healey House in memory of Charles John Brook of Thickhollins. The church is constructed from rock-faced stone and features a steeply pitched red plain tiled roof that becomes shallower over the aisles. There is a square tower located in the south-west corner, and the church has a 4-bay buttressed nave and a 2-bay chancel. The aisle windows are 3-light, some featuring intersecting tracery and others with reticulated tracery. The east window has 5 lights, and the west window has 4 lights, both adorned with Decorated tracery. The south porch is made of timber on dwarf walls. The tower is two tiers high, with angle buttresses that have offsets, small 2-light traceried louvred openings for the bell chamber, and round clock faces, all with hood moulds. The eaves cornice of the tower is topped with a slender splay-footed shingled spire.
Inside, there is a 4-bay arcade on short octagonal piers, with double chamfered arches. The long, light chancel features a carved stone reredos designed as a blind arcade with carved foliage in the spandrels. The walls include painted texts such as the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments. A notable feature is a gilded eagle lectern from 1908 with an Art Nouveau stem. The church does not have stained glass, and the roof is an arched braced collar beam supported by corbel brackets.
