Description

SE 11 SW HELME LANE (Crosland Edge) 2/13 Lower Edge Farmhouse (block to east of main range and at 90°) G.V. II

Former farmhouse, now a part of larger residence. Dated 1648. Deeply coursed hammer dressed stone. Stone slate roof. Chamfered gable copings on cut kneelers. One finial. Later central stack. Two storeys. The main entrance is on the west side close to the south gable end. Doorway has chamfered reveals and Tudor arched lintel. Highly decorative shield over doorway is inscribed: EB IB EB ME 1648 Over this is stepped hood mould with decorative stops. One 2-light double chamfered window over, with mullions removed. South gable has 6-light window with king mullion only remaining and with hood mould with only one stop remaining. To 1st floor is one 4-light window with 2 mullions removed and hood mould. Both are double chamfered. The side elevation has 2 round-arched fine windows at high level. Altered ground floor windows. The north gable has one double chamfered window to each floor, that to ground floor, formerly of 4-lights with hood mould, now with all mullions removed, that to 1st floor being of 3-lights, with one new mullion, and hood mould with decorative stops.
