Description
The Mechanics Institute, built in 1860 by John Hogg of Halifax, is a notable structure located on Peel Street in Marsden. It is constructed from hammer dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a hipped slate roof that has a frieze of moulded bracketed eaves cornice. The building stands two storeys high and has a deep ashlar band between the floors.
The facade facing Peel Street is symmetrical with three bays, highlighted by a central portico supported by paired Corinthian columns and backing pilasters, along with a full entablature of blocking course. The ground floor windows are round arched, adorned with voussoirs and an impost band, while the first-floor windows are also round arched, featuring impost capitals, scrolled spandrels, console keystones, and a bracketed cornice. Above the central window, there is a carved head supported by scrolls.
On the Brougham Road side, the five-bay symmetrical facade mirrors the design of the Peel Street facade, but the portico has single columns, and the two ground floor windows on the left are square-headed with tall brackets supporting a cornice. A dormer with scrolled support is located above this elevation. The three-bay elevation includes a prominent stack at eaves level.
At the corner of the building, there is a tall timber clock tower, which is louvred at the base and features a round clock on all four faces, each with a triangular pediment above. The tower is topped with a steep pyramidal roof that includes lucarnes and decorative metalwork railings. The Mechanics Institute occupies an important corner site.
