Description

Close Gate Bridge is a 17th or 18th century single span stone arched packhorse bridge that crosses Haigh Clough. It features a slightly projecting string course that serves as the base for the parapet, which is made of coursed rubble. The bridge has semi-circular copings and an internal width of approximately 4 feet 6 inches. The walking surface consists of rough stone setts. This bridge is located on the main pack-horse route from the Colne Valley over Close Moss towards Rochdale and is similar in design to Mellor Bridge in Marsden. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
