Description

Central (Kaye’s) College, dating from the mid-19th century, is constructed of ashlar with a hipped slate roof. It has two storeys and features a modillioned eaves cornice, a panelled blocking course, and urn finials at the corners. Rusticated quoins are also present. The southernmost window range incorporates a shallow, canted bay with eclectic foliate piers extending through both storeys, and full entablatures on the ground floor with dentil details. Decorative carving is found on the sill brackets, in the spandrels of the ground-floor windows (which have round arches), and in the frieze of the first-floor windows. The central first-floor window is distinguished by two round-headed sashes with foliate capitals, set within a raised frame featuring a moulded cornice and carved detail above the window heads. The two north windows have moulded and shouldered frames with foliage carving on the sill brackets, flanking scrolls and along the head of the frame. Ground-floor windows have hollow chamfered round arches within raised frames, with moulded cornices, gadrooned scrolls, keystones, and pediment-shaped acroteria above. Foliage carving is incorporated into the spandrels and acroteria. A four-panelled door, with moulded imposts and voussoirs, is set within a porch featuring columns with eclectic foliage capitals supporting a full entablature with carved modillions and a blocking course. Further foliage carving is present in the spandrels of the door and between the modillions of the porch.
