Description

Oaklands Private Chapel of Rest is a mid-19th century house constructed of ashlar with a graduated grey slate roof. The building stands two storeys high and is two rooms deep, featuring three bays with the outer bays projecting forward. It has a plinth and three steps leading to a central, panelled double door, which is topped by an overlight and set within a basket-arched surround. This surround includes moulded plinth blocks, a band, a coved edge, and dog-tooth decoration, along with two colonnettes that support a corbelled balustrade.

To the left of the doorway is a canted bay window with a panelled and moulded plinth. This window has paired round-headed sashes with a floriated colonnette in the centre and lower rectangular sashes on the sides, all beneath a hoodmould, with a moulded cornice and a fretted parapet. To the right, there is a doorway featuring a three-light window with round-headed lights, a chamfered mullion with carved capitals, and a hoodmould. The ground floor has cill and lintel bands, while the first floor has a cill band.

The central round-arched window is adorned with an archivolt, keystone, and imposts, flanked by two-light windows that have moulded capitals on square mullions and a corbelled cill on the right window. This window also has a continuous hoodmould and a moulded modillion cornice. The roof is hipped over the projecting end bays, with corniced end stacks, two on each side, and iron finials on the gables.

Inside, there is an open-string dog-leg staircase featuring a moulded wooden handrail and newel, along with turned cast-iron balusters. The stairhall arch has a panelled soffit.
