Description

The Temperance Institute and Nos 89, 91, 93 and 95 North Street is a building dating from 1896, originally serving as a temperance institute and shops, and now functioning as commercial accommodation and a social club. It is constructed of ashlar and stands three storeys tall.

On the south-west corner, there is a polygonal tower featuring three round-headed oriel windows on the first floor with broken pediments, and three pairs of round-headed windows on the second floor. At the top of the tower, there is a wooden lantern and a polygonal dome topped with an iron wind-vane and a lead roof.

The North Street front includes five segmental-arched shop windows with 20th-century shop fronts (nos 89-95), and five windows on each upper floor with stone mullions. The first-floor windows have cornices, while the second-floor windows are round-headed and arranged in pairs. The right bay features a round-arched, moulded doorway leading to the Temperance Institute, which has iron gates and consoles supporting an entablature with a frieze of swags and putti flanking the plaque that reads 'Temperance Institute'. There is a moulded stringcourse at the ground floor, a modillioned eaves cornice, and a segmental broken pediment above the eaves that is dated 1896. The building also has panelled stone chimneys.

The Albert Street front showcases an Ionic entrance with attached columns and a moulded round arch, which has 'Temperance Hall 1896' carved on the frieze, although this is now covered by a sign reading 'Walker Social Club'. There are five windows on each floor of this elevation.
