Description

The Keighley War Memorial is a significant structure built from sandstone sourced from the local Eastburn Quarry. It features a tall obelisk set on a two-tier pedestal and a three-stepped base, all standing on a paved platform surrounded by low stone walls, which can be accessed by four steps. At the top of the obelisk is a bronze figure of Victory, with one hand outstretched holding a laurel wreath and the other hand grasping a palm branch.

On the east and west sides of the pedestal, there are curved projections that support life-size bronze statues of a seaman and an infantryman. The seaman is depicted holding a telescope to his right eye, while the soldier stands at ease, fully dressed for battle, with detailed representations of his dress, weaponry, and equipment.

The north and south sides of the memorial feature ornate bronze panels that are heavily wreathed and set within projecting stone frames. The panel on the north side bears the inscription: 1914-1918 / 1939-1945 / IN PROUD AND/ GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THOSE MEN OF / KEIGHLEY WHO / GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / AND THE WORLD WAR / IN DEFENCE OF / FREEDOM AND JUSTICE / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE. Additionally, there is a tablet on the pedestal that commemorates the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. The bronze panel on the south side displays the Borough coat of arms in relief, with a stone tablet beneath it laid in 2000 by the Royal British Legion and the Keighley branch of the Duke of Wellington’s Regimental Association, honoring those who lost their lives in the service of their country.
