Description
The building is a Congregational Sunday school, dated 1856, located in Heckmondwike on High Street. It is constructed of dressed stone and features a hipped slate roof that is covered in bitumen. The structure is two storeys high and includes a string course. The five-bay facade has the central three bays that project slightly forward and are topped with a pediment. This pediment contains a blind oculus in the tympanum, supported by elaborate foliage, and features a raised inscription that reads: "INDEPENDENT DAY AND SABBATH SCHOOLS. ANNO DOMINI 1856." The ground floor windows are round arched, with a double string course at the impost level, while the first-floor windows are also round arched but have slightly pointed heads, elongated keys, and Composite pilaster surrounds. The side elevations consist of three bays, similar to the front, and there is a later four-bay addition at the rear.
