Description
Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic church located on Bath Road in Heckmondwike, built between 1914 and 1915. It features red brick construction with grey faience dressings and slate roofs, designed in the Byzantine Revival style with a Latin cross plan.
The west front has a central doorway, which was altered in the late 20th century, featuring double doors with a wooden surround topped by a decorated cornice. Above the doorway is a faience panel inscribed with "DOMINO PARACLETO." The doorway is set within a wide round arch that has a moulded impost band and seven circular windows. Flanking the entrance are slightly set back aisles, each containing a round-headed light lancet surrounded by faience, linked by a cill band.
The north and south facades each have central transept windows, which are large round arches containing three round-headed and graduated lights, separated by columns. The aisles to the west each have a single round-headed lancet, while those to the east have two similar lancets, all linked by a cill band. The east end of the church features three blind apses.
A central dome is supported by an octagonal brick drum, with each face displaying a small round-headed lancet linked by cill bands. The dome is topped with a shallow copper dome and a cross finial.
Inside, the church has a wide nave and transepts, with a square central space supported by four polished marble columns featuring plain cushion capitals. The linking round arches above have moulded plaster cornices with triangular spandrels leading to a circular drum with eight round-headed windows. There are apses in the nave and each side aisle, elegant wooden pews, and an octagonal stone font. The west gallery has a panelled front and a later organ. Most windows contain simple geometric patterned stained glass.
This church was built for Father John O'Connor, who contributed generously to its construction.
