Description
The Midland Bank is a bank building located in Heckmondwike, constructed in 1863 in a Classical style. It is built of ashlar stone with rusticated quoins and features a hipped slate roof. The building has three storeys, with a dentilled cornice above the ground floor and a dentilled eaves cornice topped with a balustrade that includes turned balusters and vase acroteria. The facade has four bays, although there are five ground floor windows and one doorway. The left return bay is treated as part of the facade.
The ground floor openings are framed by nook shafted pilasters that support stilted, moulded segmental heads, each featuring large raised keystones. The spandrels are elaborately carved with foliage and grotesques. The first floor windows have square heads, adorned with a guilloche frieze and square brackets that support a canopy. The second floor windows are designed with hollow chamfered reveals, shouldered heads, and aprons. This building occupies an important site in the town centre.
