Description
This is a barn located immediately to the west of the former farmhouse at Tenter House Farm, dating from the 17th century, with 19th and 20th century walling on the south side. The earlier sections are built from thinly coursed rubble with quoins, while the later parts feature hammer dressed stone that encloses a timber frame. The barn has a stone slate roof and consists of four bays. There are square-headed opposed cart entries in the second bay from the east, and a mistal door is located in the west bay on the north side. The east bay is obscured by a later addition at a right angle.
Inside, the barn showcases post and truss construction with three trusses on posts and remnants of a fourth truss in the west gable. The trusses are king post types with struts, and the tie-beams are braced to the posts. The king posts extend to support a square-set ridge piece, and the wall-plates are intact. There is evidence of wind bracing. The central cross frame features a lower tie-beam, while the next frame to the east has a similar beam that has been sawn off but retains housings for studs on the underside of the upper tie-beam. The original rafters are still present.
