Description

This is a timber-posted barn located at the rear of Orchard Farm House, likely dating to the 17th century, although some of the cladding may be from the 18th century. The barn is constructed with very thinly coursed stone, featuring square vent holes in the left gable and quoins. It has a roof of stone slates. A central, square-headed cart entry is present, with outshots on either side. Later additions have been made to the sides and rear of the barn. Inside, there are two king-post trusses resting on posts; the rear posts appear to be encased within the wall. The wall-plate is intact at the rear, and the right-hand truss includes struts. The posts are braced to the tie-beams, and the king posts have small braces to the ridge. Housings found in the undersides of the principal rafters and the tie-beam of one truss suggest the presence of studding.
