Description
The memorial stone and base of the market cross, located opposite the junction with Combs Road, date from 1865, while the base itself is from the 17th century or earlier. The memorial features a large square post made of red sandstone, which is rendered in panels and has stop-chamfered edges. It is topped with a decorative four-gabled cap, although the finial is missing. One side of the stone once served as a drinking water fountain, complete with an iron bowl. The opposite side bears a brass plate commemorating Ridley Rewcastle, Clerk of Works on the Savile York Estates, who died on April 21st, 1865. This memorial was erected by the agent, builders, and other friends as a tribute to a just and faithful man. The cylindrical base of the cross, which is situated alongside the memorial, features a round socket at the top.
