Description
The former Thornhill Grammar School, now disused, dates back to 1643 and was constructed with funds bequeathed by Charles Greenwood, a Rector of Thornhill. A rear section was added in 1884 as a copy of the original building. The structure features hammer dressed stone, with some parts rendered, and includes quoins and a plinth. The stone slates were removed at the time of the survey. The gable copings are hollow chamfered, resting on moulded kneelers with finials, and the south side has hollow chamfered eaves, while the north side has a later parapet. Each gable end is adorned with a 10-light mullion and transomed double chamfered window; the eastern gable has an inserted doorway, and there are 2-light double chamfered windows in each gable apex. The sides of the building are four bays long, featuring cross windows, with only two on the north side where a contemporary house used to adjoin, both of which are now blocked. On the south side, within the later addition, one window is blocked, and there is an original doorway that is also blocked, featuring a moulded surround and a deep lintel dated 1643. Inside, there is a wide low arched fireplace on the north side with a moulded surround, and the roof is supported by three 19th-century king-post trusses, although the tie-beams may be original.
