Description

The wheelhouse on the west bank of Ringstone Edge Reservoir was built in 1886 by engineer Thomas Hawksley from Wakefield. It is one of two wheelhouses, with the other located on Saddleworth Road. The structure is made of rock-faced stone and ashlar, featuring a cylindrical shape with an arched doorway that has an expressed keystone. It has a heavy ashlar cornice and a hemispherical dome, which is topped by a solid parapet with an iron crown. This wheelhouse is a notable example of the masonry traditions found in the area.
