Description

Lower Top of Hill and Barn is a mid-18th century terrace with early to mid-19th century alterations, located in Scammonden. The building is constructed from coursed rubble and hammer-dressed stone, featuring quoins and a pitched stone slate roof. It has three stacks and a coped south gable, standing two storeys high.

The east elevation includes three ground floor entrances with stone surrounds, a 6-light stone mullioned window, a 5-light stone mullioned window (with one light blocked), a single light window with stone surrounds, a double-chamfered 4-light stone mullioned window (with two mullions removed), and a double-chamfered 3-light stone mullioned window. The barn section has two small entrances with stone surrounds and a large central doorway with a segmental arch, large keystone, stone surrounds, and tie-stones. There is also one recent or altered window opening.

On the north gable, there is one small recent window at ground floor level and one small window in the apex. The first floor of the east elevation features two 5-light stone mullioned windows (one with two lights blocked), two 3-light stone mullioned windows, and two 2-light stone mullioned windows. The west elevation has various single and 2-light windows at the first floor, along with an extension that has a catslide roof.
