Description

The barn located to the northwest of New Hey Farmhouse is a detached structure dating from the late 17th century, with a datestone and initials GEW from 1693. It has been converted into a residential activity centre. The building is constructed of coursed rubble made from millstone grit, with quoins and a pitched stone slate roof that has recently been replaced. The northwest gable features a small vent in the apex with a chamfered millstone grit surround, while the southeast gable has a small circular vent with an inscription and the date 1693.

On the northeast elevation, there is a large doorway with quoins and a deep oak lintel, alongside an outshut to the right that contains a smaller doorway with quoins and chamfered reveals. The southwest elevation has a small central doorway with chamfered millstone grit surrounds and lintel, and it originally had moulded millstone grit corbels that supported a canopy over the doorway.

The history of the barn and farmhouse indicates that the Holdsworth family farmed the land for many years before it was acquired by the Water Authority during the construction of Scammonden Dam in the 1960s. The farm was included in the lease of Scammonden Water Sailing Club but fell into disuse until it was taken over by the District Scout Council and converted into its current use.

The barn is designated for its historical significance, as it retains many original features despite its conversion, and it has group value with the associated farmhouse to the southeast.
