Description
Near Royd Farmhouse and the attached barn is a house and barn dating from the late 17th century. The structure is built of rubble brought to course, with rough dressed quoins and a stone slate roof. The east front of the house has two storeys, while there is a single-storey outshut or aisle at the rear. The house features two cells, each with five-light double chamfered mullioned windows, and the first floor has chamfered mullioned windows with seven lights and four lights. The barn, attached to the left end of the house, has quoins and a cart entry with a straight lintel supported by slightly corbelled jambs, similar to the Old Chamber on Spencer Lane in Hebden Royd. It also includes rectangular ventilators. The rear of the barn has an aisle that projects forward from the house, featuring quoined angles, rectangular ventilators, and a cart entry with a wooden lintel. There is a mistal doorway to the aisle with a quoined lintel to the right of the doorhead, inscribed with the initials of John IW AH 17 1 75 Wheelwright, who once owned many farms in the area. The house has a modern porch and flat-faced mullioned windows with two, three, and four lights that are in keeping with the original style.
Inside the barn, there is a triangular truss without struts or a king-post, supported by a post with a curved brace to the tie beam. The barn also features a large heavy arcade plate and a wall tie. The house has two stacks at the ridge.
