Description
Lower Goat House is a house that is believed to date from 1585 but was rebuilt in the mid 18th century and again in the late 20th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys.
The south front features a gabled cross wing on the left, which has quoins and thin flat-faced mullioned windows with four lights on each floor. The gable is coped and has kneelers and a finial at the apex. The hall range, which is set back, has three bays of chamfered mullioned windows, each with four lights and hoodmoulds that have straight returns or spiral label stops. Between the second and third bays is a doorway with composite jambs and a chamfered surround, above which is a small recess with a hoodmould that contains a sundial.
The left-hand return wall of the cross wing is made of thinner coursed stone and retains double chamfered mullioned windows with four lights, although two mullions are missing. Above these, on the first floor, is a chamfered window that formerly had two lights but now lacks its mullion. There is a central stack on the ridge of the cross wing and a modern extruded gable stack on the main range. The interior features a large room that is open to the roof and has queen-post trusses. The rear of the building has been remodelled and includes a modern extension at right angles, which forms a garage with bedrooms above.
