Description

The Brown Cow is a house that was formerly a public house, dating from the late 17th century with alterations made in the mid-18th century. It is built from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar quoins and features a stone slate roof. The building is T-shaped and has two storeys.

The south front is the long side of the cross-wing, which has a 4-light double chamfered mullioned window to the left of a mid-20th century added porch. Above the porch, there is a 2-light flat-faced mullioned window on the first floor. To the right of the porch, there is another window with three lights. The left-hand return wall features a 2-light window with a 4-light flat-faced mullioned window above it on the first floor. A low outshut projects forward, containing a single double-framed window, with two 2-light windows above it on the first floor of the main range. The right-hand return wall has quoins and flat-faced mullioned windows with four lights on each floor, along with a circular opening at the apex. The main range, which is set back, has a 6-light window and a 5-light window above it on the first floor. The wing has gable stacks.

Inside, the main range includes a wide room with a large fireplace that has a straight lintel, which is painted with a picture of a cow. This painting has been repainted with decorative marbling and is initialed "JMS 1921."
