Description

Rishworth School Chapel is a school house built in 1725, now serving as a chapel for Rishworth School. It features an added porch and a skillfully extended bay for the sanctuary, completed around 1961, which maintains the original style by reusing a gable window. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with a stone slate roof. The gabled porch has a Tudor arched doorway to the left of five bays containing double chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with eight lights each. Above the weathered plinth and under the first bay window is a tablet inscribed with details about John Wheelwright, who founded and endowed the school in 1725.

The left return wall is made of hammer-dressed stone with quoins, featuring a coped gable with kneelers and a stack. The right return wall has a 16-light double chamfered mullioned and transomed window with a king mullion, along with a coped gable topped by a carved pierced cross finial. The rear of the chapel has two bays of double chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with twelve lights.

The interior has been altered for church use but retains an original fireplace with simple monolithic jambs. The building is designed in the vernacular tradition of the 17th century.
