Description
Shiloh Chapel and schoolroom is a large rural chapel and schoolroom range with a gable entry, built from rubble masonry and featuring rendered elevations with ashlar scoring. The building has stressed, rendered, eared architraves around the openings and quoins at the front angles. It is topped with hipped slate roofs, with the chapel roof being grouted. The chapel has a four-window entrance elevation, with a central flat-roofed porch situated between the outer windows. The chapel windows are large 12-pane hornless sashes, and there are three similar windows without architraves along the left (northeast) side. The porch features a central entrance flanked by three-pane lights, and its moulded parapet forms a shallow pediment above the entrance. The schoolroom is slightly set back from the chapel and has a central entrance flanked by two-paned sash windows with margin panes, along with a datestone above the entrance.
Inside the chapel, the entrance leads into a small vestibule, with panelled doors flanking the set fawr that leads into the main body of the chapel. The interior features three ranks of raking box pews, with the central rank divided and additional pews along the walls on either side of the set fawr. The set fawr, pulpit, and pews all have facing recessed panels with moulded surrounds. The set fawr is rectangular with side entrances, and the pulpit consists of three bays, with the central bay advanced and featuring roll chamfered angles. The side entrances are raised by six steps. Behind the pulpit is a camber-headed recess with an ornate timber surround, and the sides have shaped panels and cornices with 'keystone' and scrolled brackets. The walls are plastered, with the lower half featuring tongue and groove panelling and a simple moulded cornice. The ceiling is decorated with ornate floriate light bosses.
The schoolroom has similar wall finishes and a ceiling consisting of three bays of recessed plastered panels with raking side panels. The bays are articulated by timber dividers on shaped corbels, and each bay also features an ornate floriate light boss. The entrance leads into a small timber vestibule with side entrances, and the schoolroom retains its original bench seats.
