Description
Lower Woodhead Farmhouse, consisting of Nos 1, 2, and 3/4, is a late 17th century three-cell house that was extended in 1736 to create an additional three cells, with alterations made to the first floor windows. The building is constructed of thin coursed hammer dressed stone and features a stone slate roof, forming a long range under a single roof. The left end of the structure is an 18th century house.
The farmhouse is two storeys high, with quoins and coped gables that include moulded kneelers. It has three bays of flat faced mullioned windows, comprising four-lights, four-lights, and three-lights on the ground floor, and four-lights, two-lights, and three-lights on the first floor. There is a doorway with a straight lintel and chamfered surround inscribed "1S /1736" located between the second and third bays, which is protected by a gabled porch.
The remains of quoins indicate the division of the earlier house, which has a three-room plan featuring double chamfered mullioned windows on the ground floor with three-lights, four-lights, and three-lights, as well as three flat faced mullioned windows of four-lights on the first floor. There are also three inserted cottage doorways with monolithic jambs. An outshut at the rear of this range was likely added in 1736. The building has four stacks along the ridge.
