Description

The Old Water Mill is a former mill dating from the early to mid-19th century, and later converted into seven flats. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys and has an attic. The prominent gables face the lane, and all windows have plain stone surrounds with projecting sills. The building has five bays, with a doorway featuring tie stone jambs set in the second bay. The central bay has shallower windows, and a roof dormer over the central three bays. A six-bay return front has windows of a similar style. At the rear, there is a single-bay extension which partially obscures a blocked Venetian window in the gable apex. The mill was a former cotton mill belonging to George Hinchliffe of Cragg in Erringden, and was in his possession until his death in 1854.
