Description

The Homestead, The Homestead Cottage, and the attached mill building is a house that was formerly a public house known as the Sportsman. It dates from the late 17th century, with early 18th-century and mid-19th-century additions. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. It forms a U-shaped block, with the late 17th-century two-cell house (The Homestead Cottage) located to the south. This part is two storeys high with an attic and features two bays of five-light double chamfered mullioned windows, with similar windows above on the first floor, although those are only single chamfered. There is a doorway with composite jambs set between (now blocked) and quoins.

To the north, the right-hand return wall has a former gable-entry doorway with a quoined lintel and a cyma moulded surround. Above this doorway, there is a twelve-light flat-faced mullioned and transomed window, along with a four-light window in the attic. The left-hand return wall has a modern entrance. The building has gable stacks. Set back from the main structure is a single-cell early 19th-century cottage (The Homestead), which features a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a two-light window above it, as well as a seven-light window with two of its three lights above on the first floor. All windows are chamfered mullioned. This façade has been rebuilt, reusing the original windows.

At the junction of the two-and-a-half storey mill building, there is a former doorway with a heavy lintel and tie-stone jambs (now blocked) and quoins. Some windows in this section have wooden lintels. The rear gable features a doorway with a chamfered lintel and large square windows above on the first floor and attic. There is also a single-storey outshut at the rear of the central cottage.
