Description
A back-to-back terrace of 36 houses, built in the 1840s for Colonel Edward Akroyed, likely designed by W H Crossland. The houses are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings, and have slate roofs. Features include a chamfered plinth, Tudor arched doors with ornamental strap hinges set in stop-chamfered surrounds, and mullion and transom windows. The windows are double-chamfered. Both the Calder Terrace and St Stephens Street elevations have eight dormers, with nine stacks rising from the ridge, each featuring a plinth, tabling, and a vertical groove. The end houses project forward under coped gables, showcasing two-light mullion windows and two-light mullion and transom windows above. The end elevations feature three-light mullion and transom windows, with additional windows placed above, alongside a cellar door, a Tudor arched door, a Tudor arched shop window in a molded surround, and an eaves stack. Garden walls are built of narrow coursed sandstone with triangular copings. This terrace represents an important early example of planned industrial housing. Described as such by Nikolaus Pevsner in "Yorkshire West Riding" and detailed further in "West Yorkshire Architects and Architecture."
