Description

Scholes Farmhouse, now divided into three livings, was initially built in 1694, as indicated by initials and a date stone ('AR 1694'). It is constructed of dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The original design comprised three rooms, with a back wing and a cross wing, and a continuous outshot or aisle along the rear. The house has a coped gable with kneelers, while the cross wing lacks this feature.

The front facade, viewed from the left, has a depressed arched doorway and two windows with plain reveals. A central enclosed porch features a gable with kneelers and a depressed arched doorway with chamfered jambs and a date stone. Above the porch is a three-light double-chamfered mullioned window. To either side are double-chamfered mullioned windows with numerous lights, each featuring a central king mullion; eight lights are on the ground floor and six above. The window on the left has been altered to create a doorway and retains only two mullions. The upper-floor window has lost its outer mullions. The gable of the cross wing has an 19th-century two-light window above a five-light double-chamfered mullioned window, which also lacks outer mullions. The interior has a passage plan and one stack to the ridge. Decorative cast-iron gutter brackets are present at the eaves.

The rear of the house features a six-light double-chamfered mullioned window (with two mullions removed) in the aisle, which is covered by a cat-slide roof of one storey. The rear gables of the back wing and cross wing have double-chamfered mullioned windows with several lights, some of which have lost mullions. The gable of the back wing is coped with kneelers.
