Description
Copley Viaduct is a railway viaduct that crosses the River Calder, the Calder and Hebble Navigation, and Wakefield Road. It was built around 1851 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company. The structure is made of snecked rock-faced sandstone and features a total of 23 arches supported by tall piers. There are 15 semicircular arches with rock-faced voussoirs, and four wider segmental arches at each end, which also have similar voussoirs in ashlar. The easternmost arch over Wakefield Road is notably flatter. A plain band runs at the impost and cornice level, with a parapet above. The viaduct is mainly located in the parish of Halifax. The Sowerby Bridge to Halifax branch line opened on 1 January 1852.
