Description
Copley Bridge is a railway bridge over the River Calder, built around 1840 by George Stephenson for the Manchester and Leeds Railway Company. The bridge is constructed from regularly coursed rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings and features three segmental arches. It has plinths with a roll mould on the piers, a band at the impost level, and rusticated voussoirs that are brought to course with expressed keystones. Above, there is a simple cornice with a parapet, and the bridge is supported by curved ramped abutments. Part of the bridge is located in the parish of Halifax. The first section of the Manchester to Leeds railway was opened to Sowerby Bridge in 1840, with the extension to Leeds completed later.
