Description

The boundary walls, gatepiers, raised terrace, and steps in front of Nos 112 to 124 (even) and Allangate Lodge are associated with the former mansion known as Allangate, which was built by Bernard Hartley around 1810 and later altered and expanded around 1845 and 1870 by Thomas Shaw, who served as MP for Halifax from 1882 to 1893. The structure features thin coursed stone with ashlar dressings. A tall boundary wall along the road ends with ashlar piers, while to the left, there are lower, finely built walls topped with an ashlar apron that has rusticated panels. The tall entrance gate-piers next to the Lodge have tapering rusticated panels, a cornice, a base, and ball finials. The mansion is situated on a raised terrace supported by tall retaining walls with pilaster strips. Long flights of stone steps with half-landings lead up to the main entrances, which are flanked by stepped walls with ramped copings. The terrace wall attached to the east wing features curved quadrant walls and battered piers. This site is included for its group value.
