Description

The steeple of the former Church of St Paul dates from 1847 and was designed by R D Chantrell. It is a stone tower with a broach spire, built in a Gothic style. The tower is square with stepped angle buttresses and is divided into three stages by string courses. The second stage features a clock on the south elevation, and all four sides have triple lancet windows, with the two outer lights blind and the central light louvred. Above this is a tall, broach spire with lucarnes. The east elevation, which formerly connected to the church, shows the outline of the former nave and includes a narrow lancet window on the first floor and an arched doorway below.

The church was originally constructed in 1846-7 to serve the growing population of King Cross, Halifax, and replaced by a larger building on Queen's Road in 1912. After a partial roof collapse in 1931, much of the original church was demolished, leaving the spire and graveyard. The burial ground was later converted into a public garden. The tower and spire are included as a local feature and are designated at Grade II for their architecture as a good example of a mid-19th century Commissioners' Church by a well-known architect, and for their historical interest, representing the development of Halifax in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
