Description
Crossley and Porter School is a large stone building constructed in 1864 by J Hogg, designed in the free Northern Renaissance style. The building is rectangular with two main storeys and an additional storey in the large corner pavilions, topped by a steep slated roof. Each storey features an order of pilasters. The centre of the south-east front has an elaborate entrance tower that rises to a clock stage, complete with a cupola and weather vane. There is a wide central projection on the south-west side, which includes a single-storeyed bow and a prominent, decorative gable. The building also features other elaborate bows and dormers with finials and cresting on the roof. The lower buildings to the north-west are not included in this listing, which recognizes the overall effect of the school.
