Description

Royd Farmhouse is a house from the late 16th century, currently divided into three occupations. It is built from large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and follows a hall-and-cross-wing plan.

The south front is divided into four sections. The first section is a cross-wing that projects forward and has double chamfered mullioned windows with four lights, featuring hollow chamfered mullions and hoodmoulds with straight returns. The same window style is present on the first floor, although it is missing two mullions. The doorway here, which has tie-stones, has been converted into a window. The gable is coped and topped with a crocketed finial.

The second section includes a porch with a cat-slide roof that connects the cross-wing and the main range. This porch features a massive doorway with composite jambs and a moulded surround, topped with a deeply moulded hood. The third section has a four-light double chamfered mullioned window, which is also missing some mullions. The fourth section features a large hall window with a double chamfered surround, hollow chamfered mullions, and transoms; it was originally a twelve-light window but is now half blocked due to an inserted floor in what was once an open chamber. Above this window is a three-light chamfered mullioned window. There is one chimney stack located at the junction of the third and fourth sections. The return wall of the cross-wing has large chamfered windows, altered in the mid-19th century, which were inserted into the original walling.
