Description

The former Fountain Public House, with two attached cottages to the west, dates from the early 19th century. It faces south and is constructed of watershot masonry with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. The south-facing gable has three symmetrical bays. It is two and a half storeys high, with quoins detailing. A classical doorcase has a plinth, monolithic jambs with a moulded edge, and a pediment. Large sash windows with plain stone surrounds and projecting sills are positioned on each floor and above the door. A coped gable incorporates a large Venetian window with a projecting impost and keystone. The left-hand return wall has three bays, the first two forming cottages. These cottages feature flat-faced mullioned windows of five lights, with associated doorways and tie-stones. The rear is rendered. The right-hand return wall has similar windows, with the first floor retaining original twelve-pane sash windows to the centre light, with eight-pane fixed lights to either side—some with original bullseyes. Three stacks rise from the ridge.
