Description
This barn, located 15 meters northeast of Higher Cragg, dates from the late 16th century and is constructed from large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It features a three-bay single-aisled design, with the aisle occupying two bays on the south side. The gables are coped and include kneelers and a base for a finial at the apex. The barn has rectangular entries with composite jambs and a deeply chamfered surround. The aisle projects forward beneath a cat-slide roof, and there is a mistal door set within a re-entrant angle, featuring a large lintel and chamfered surround. The south wall includes three rectangular chamfered ventilators and a similar mistal doorway. The left-hand return wall also has rectangular chamfered ventilators.
Inside, there are two queen strut trusses, with the principals crossing at the apex and a diamond-set ridge. The purlins are stop-chamfered, and one post within the aisle is braced to the truss and arcade-plate, with a wall tie. The mistal is at a lower level, with a hay loft above occupying one bay. This barn is a good example of its type.
