Description
Frost Hole is an early 17th-century house located on Frost Hole Lane in Cragg Vale. It is constructed from large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and a two-room plan, with an additional 19th-century cell.
The south front of the house showcases former three-light chamfered windows in the parlour and a former eight-light mullioned and transomed window at eaves level, which belonged to the former open hall. The doorway has a straight lintel, composite jambs, and a stop chamfered surround, creating a baffle entry. The left return wall includes two-light chamfered mullioned windows on both floors. At the rear, there are remnants of a late 17th-century added gabled kitchen. The hall range features a two-light former fire-window, while the right return wall has two flat-faced mullioned windows with projecting sills, each consisting of three lights with a single light above. The house has one stack at the ridge.
Inside, the hall contains a stone heck and a fireplace with a segmental arched lintel supported by a corbel, along with a cyma moulded shelf and a stop chamfered moulded surround. There is a Tudor arched doorway leading to a now-demolished kitchen. The interior also features stop-chamfered spine beams and an inserted 19th-century stone wall with two segmental arched doorways. A king-post truss with four 'V' struts is visible, grooved on the soffit of the tie-beam. Part of a plaster frieze from the former open hall remains above the inserted floor on the northern wall.
