Description

Lower Small Shaw Farmhouse and the attached barn date from the late 16th century, with additional construction in the mid-17th century and a later bay added to the barn in the mid-19th century. The farmhouse is built from large dressed stone for the earliest sections, with coarser hammer-dressed stone for the 17th-century additions, and dressed stone for the 19th-century barn addition. The building has a stone slate roof and is two storeys high, forming an L-shape.

The south front features a string course above two bays of double chamfered mullioned windows, with six lights and eight lights, and two four-light windows on the first floor. The added bay includes a six-light window with a king mullion and a six-light window above it on the first floor. There is a tall cart entry with a deep monolithic lintel and composite jambs, which has a chamfered surround. To the right, there is a similarly dressed mistal doorway. The left return wall has an extruded stack with offsets, reduced in height, to the right of the original gable entry doorway, which now has a broad chamfered surround and has been converted into a window. Above this is a four-light chamfered window missing two mullions.

At the rear of the main range, there is a semi-circular arched cart entry, likely a 19th-century alteration. A notable feature is the impressive mullioned and transomed stepped window on the east elevation of the kitchen wing, which has six over eight lights. There is a single stack on each ridge.
