Description

Upper Small Shaw Farmhouse and the attached barn date from the early 17th century, with an added cell, porch, and barn that were completed in 1681. The building is constructed from large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The barn, located at the left end, has a mistal doorway with monolithic jambs, and the lintel is carved with the date in high relief. The cart entry has chamfered jambs and a semi-circular arched opening.

The farmhouse includes a 4-light chamfered mullioned window that has been altered to 2 lights, with a 2-light window above it. The gabled porch features a plinth and a doorway with an ogee lintel and chamfered surround. There is also a 4-light window with cavetto moulded jambs and mullions, which has arched lights and sunken spandrels, although all these features are currently blocked. The right-hand return wall has been rebuilt at the first-floor level.

At the rear, there is a 4-light chamfered window missing 2 mullions, with a 2-light window above it. Additionally, there is a 9-light double chamfered mullioned window that lacks 4 mullions, and a 6-light chamfered window missing 3 mullions. An unusual window features 2 lights on either side of 3 lights with a lower lintel, lacking 4 mullions. The barn aisle projects forward and has a square-headed cart entry with tie-stone jambs. The building has coped gables with kneelers and two stacks along the ridge.

Inside, the barn has new principal beams but retains the posts to the aisle. The house is largely featureless except for a large fireplace that is covered up and has a chamfered shelf.
