Description

Horse Hey Farmhouse and the attached barn date from the late 17th century, with the roof of the barn raised and a two-cell house added to form a laithe-house in the early 19th century. The barn is constructed of large dressed stone, while the house features finer, thinner coursed stone. Both structures have quoins and coped gables with kneelers. The building is two storeys high, with flat-faced mullioned windows that have projecting sills on the east entrance front and flush sills at the rear. The front includes a two-light window, a door with tie-stone jambs, and a four-light window, while the first floor has two four-light windows. The barn to the right has a segmental arched cart entry with a simple Venetian window above it. The aisle of the barn breaks forward and retains some rectangular chamfered ventilators from the 17th century. At the rear of the house, there are six-light and four-light windows on each floor. The barn features a lean-to porch with a large monolithic lintel, and the aisle has two mistal doorways with quoined lintels and stop-chamfered surrounds. Attached to the south is a low two-storey cottage from the early 18th century, which retains chamfered mullioned windows of six lights, with one blocked four-light window on the first floor. The barn has a wide coped gable with a 17th-century kneeler at the rear and a single stack at the ridge. The barn is a four-bay structure with large softwood queen post trusses, aisled for two bays, and the earlier roof line of the barn is clearly visible. This building is a good example of a laithe-house.
