Description

Purprice Farmhouse is a house from the late 17th century, originally part of a single dwelling with Lower Purprice. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and a three-room plan, although one cell has been demolished. A part of the wall with a four-light double chamfered mullioned window still remains. To the left, there is a six-light window that has been altered to three lights with new mullions, and another six-light window that is missing two mullions. On the first floor, there are two chamfered mullioned windows, each with four lights, also lacking two mullions. The left-hand return wall has quoins and a coped gable with kneelers, as well as one stack on the ridge. The rear of the house features a fine Tudor arched doorway with a moulded surround and sunken spandrels, located near the junction with Lower Purprice. Inside, the door opens against a heck screen made from large dressed stones. The division wall between two rooms is constructed from single-skin ashlar blocks, which splay out to support double depth walls and spine beams.
