Description

Shaw's Farmhouse is a farmhouse and cottage that dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed from squared limestone rubble with millstone grit dressings and features a stone slate roof. The building originally had a central staircase plan and is two storeys high. It was formerly double fronted, with a late 19th-century bay window added to the right.

The central entrance, which is now in an Ionic porch dated 1738, includes fluted pilasters, an entablature, and a pulvinated frieze that bears a date and badly weathered initials (possibly JP). The porch is topped with a pediment. The entrance features a late 17th-century plank door with applied mouldings.

On the ground and upper floors, there are three-light flat-faced mullioned windows with moulded architraves and diamond-pane glazing for the casements and fixed lights, along with c1900 hoodmoulds. A slate dripmould is present above the hoodmoulds on the ground floor. The right-hand bay has similar windows on each storey, but these are all from the late 19th century. The right-hand gable end has three ridge stacks, and there is a projecting single-storey gabled bay on the left side.

Inside, the farmhouse features an altered late 17th-century dog-leg staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail.
