Description
The gatepiers and flanking walls at Holden Park date from the early to mid-19th century and are constructed from coursed stone and ashlar. The gatepiers are square in shape, each featuring a stepped plinth and two panels divided by a fluted band. The lower panel has a chamfered, sunk cross, while the upper panel displays a bronze plaque. Each gatepier has an entablature with a cornice that rises to a semicircle on each face, topped with a bronze statue. The right pier includes a plaque listing the names of the urban district council members from 1925, the year the park was opened to the public, and the statue holds a torch and a snake. The left pier has a plaque commemorating the donation of the park to the public, with its statue holding a torch and a ball.
On either side of the gatepiers, there are pedestrian archways with moulded surrounds. The flanking walls slope down to the sides of these archways and continue with piers placed at regular intervals. The wall features a stepped plinth and moulded coping. The piers have a plinth, two raised panels, an entablature with a pyramidal panel on the frieze, and a stepped capstone topped with a gadrooned urn. To the far left, two similar piers serve as gatepiers. On the right side, the wall slopes down and continues at a lower height with a shorter pier, a pair of shorter gatepiers, and one remaining tall gatepier at the far right, all in a similar style. Holden Park was originally the garden of Sir Isaac Holden's house, of which only the port-cochère now remains.
