Description

Slack Lane Baptist Church is a chapel dating from 1879. It is constructed from ashlar sandstone. The building is two storeys high, with a three-bay front. The gable front has a plinth and a flight of five roll-nosed steps leading to a central porch, which features pairs of pilasters and engaged Doric columns with fluted capitals supporting a deep entablature with a dentilled cornice. The porch contains a panelled door and fanlight with glazing bars, set within a surround with a moulded lintel, a projecting moulded keystone, and fluted imposts. The ground floor windows are round-arched sashes with glazing bars, featuring keyed archivolts and moulded cills. These windows are contained within panels that extend down to the plinth, with carved spandrels. The first floor has coupled windows to the centre and a cill band resting on consoles. A string course runs around the building. The pediment has a dentilled cornice and a datestone in the tympanum. The left and right returns of the building are five bays wide, with round-headed windows and a first-floor cill band that returns. The interior features a complete gallery with panelled fronts; box pews; a bow-fronted pulpit; and a compartmented ceiling with rose vents.
