Description

1-19 Hallfield Road and 20 Lumb Lane is a residential terrace built around 1860, which is part of the same development as Nos 2 to 28 (even) and Peel Square or Lumb Lane. The buildings feature sandstone "brick" elevations with ashlar dressings and Italianate detailing. They are primarily two-storeys tall, with two pairs of buildings rising to three-storeys. The design includes sill-bands that adjust slightly with changes in level and console bracketed eaves cornices, which have large coupled terminal consoles on each front.

The three-storey sections have squat panelled quoin pilasters at the top floor and a crowning cornice adorned with large dentils. The upper floors feature revealed sash windows, with pairs of windows centered on the second floors that have consoles at the sills. The ground floor has two-light square mullioned windows, while the windows above paired or single doorways are archivolt arched. These doorways are flanked by engaged columns with enriched floral capitals, bearing archivolt arches, scrollwork on console keys, and moulded cornices.

No 20 Lumb Lane, dated 1862, is designed as a two-storey villa that balances No. 18 Lumb Lane and shares similar design features with the terrace. It has an ashlar quoin pilastered three-bay front, a console bracket eaves cornice, and a hipped slate roof. The building includes a sill band and an impost string that connects the acanthus leaf capitals of the pilasters flanking the first-floor windows, which feature voussoired vermiculated arches. The ground floor has canted bays with archivolt arched lights and carved spandrels, along with a Corinthian column porch that has a cornice and blocking course. This group of buildings is included for their group value.
